Stockholm afresh

The parents were in town earlier this week, their stay straddling those two crystalline autumn days we had then. Dad, who of course blogs, just posted the photos.

Seeing Stockholm through the eyes of first-time visitors, especially when the weather is so clement, washes away the grime of familiarity that builds up through prolonged dwelling in a place — this is one spectacularly good-looking city. The museums are impressive, the food delicious, the people seemingly obsessed with style, design and shopping — but above all, what sets Stockholm apart is how it embraces its water. Most of the world’s cities see their lakes, rivers and seas as impediments to development, or else polluted embarrassments from which to turn away. But not Stockholm. Here, water is to cityscape what white space is to an impeccably designed pageful of text. It’s this sense of balance and proportion that makes the place so attractive, even to jaded world travelers like my parents.

  1. I fully agree with you! My first visit to Stockholm this spring was overwhelming. I slept at an old monumental ship at Skeppskajen (which is now a youth hostel) and if I would wake up in the morning, I would look out over the water and see the beautiful gamla stan pridely in the morning sun. The water and the different parts of the city on the different islands with their different atmospheres makes me discover it over and over again and see it in new ways. Yup, sthlm is #1 on my list!

  2. I came across your site looking for a quote, “phaemon’s dog was right.” I just finished reading that book. umm
I like that top ten list you had posted on why Osama didn’t attack Sweden. My fellow Americans are amazingly dumb and they don’t understand the hypocracy that we are living in right now. A couple of those comment threads is the obvious source of my evidence.

  3. Nice pictures. I like the finally someone will admit that americans are, on the large, dumb and ingnorant. Every where i go here in the USA all i hear about whenever differences in countrys or types of government are talked about, is how much better the USA is than all other countries. I find this laughable. I can not wait until i am done with my degrees so i can move back to the great Sweden.

  4. Stefan,
We miss you in New York. You could have had a blisfull last weekend here and been in the marathon with 36,000 other people from around the globe.
Just had an email from your Father. His photo blog is great but no pictures of you or your sister! Hope all is well in Sweden.
    Regards,
    Doug
