Hi!
Did you know that when Swedes write emails, they tend to use a lot of exclamation marks? Practically on every line! I think it’s because they were enthusiastic early adopters of email – literally! – and the practice stuck.
I don’t in fact know if this exclamatory writing style predates the internet, as I wasn’t here then, but I doubt Strindberg injected such gusto into his missives!

Har ni märkt hur när ni skriver e-post, ni brukar använda många utropstecken? Nästan på varje rad! Jag tror orsaken är därför att ni antog tidigt e-post, och på ett jätte entusiastiskt sätt! Och det blev en vana, nu även på engelska. Nu har jag börjat också!
Jag vet faktiskt inte om ers grova utropsteckensbruk föregår nätet, därför att jag inte var i sverige då för att kolla, men jag betvivlar att Strindberg skrev sina brev med sådan stor förtjusning!

David, search engines are excluded from that directory in robots.txt. Why spammers go there is beyond me.
…And I definitely have weird Swedish friends, but it’s work emails that are mainly so chirpy — at both places where I work regularly at the moment.
Jo, John E Thelin! Här ropar man högt hela tiden! Och inte har det med internet att göra! Sverige var utropstecknets förlovade land långt innan Bredbandsbolaget härjade!
Det kanske har sitt ursprung i standardhälsningen “Hej!” En sorts folklig explosion av upphetsad punktering i 60-talets spår. Men det var långt innan jag kom hit.
Strindberg är visserligen mer återhållsam med utropstecknen, men även på hans tid skrev man “Broder!”
Hmm..until I read your observation about ” utropstecken” I have never thought about that it was so often used…any way Strinberg had mental problems so he probably should care about how we used “utropstecken” or perhaps he would just of that reason….
Another think I have been woundering about in
“iKapsel Hasa” is this:
-How on earth did you come in contact with the words ” att av fukta”..hmm was in the the instructions when you bought your iPod?
And exactly what Do You mean by

Somebody at work mentioned the term. I’m afraid there is no reason inherent in the narrative for me mentioning it right there. It was just that came up then. As for what I thought it might have meant, in English, “fukt av” sounds rather rude.
These email missives with lots of exclamation marks, they wouldn’t happen to always capitalize “Du” and “Ni”, would they?
If that’s the case, I think it’s some sort of corporate training disease you’re seeing the symptoms of.
A funny observation. Norwegians are even more exclamation-mark-happy, I think. They also tend to over-use ellipsis (dot dot dot). I do it myself, but have a routine of reading all my e-mails and removing all exclamation marks and dot dot dots before I send them.
Jag tror absolut att det har att göra med att Kalle Anka textades (serietidningen alltså) med idel stora bokstäver och utropstecken på slutet, oavsett vad meningen handlade om, under en lång period.
Märkligt nog under samma period som de bästa avsnitten – hörande till (men nu är jag tyvärr inte riktigt säker på att jag svänger mig med rätt uttryck) den s.k. högbarksismen – publicerades. Och det kan ju inte vara en slump.
Detta måste naturligtvis starkt ha färgat de kalleankaläsande generationernas föreställningar om korrekta interpunktionsvanor.
Å konsekvent bruke utropstegn for å avslutte setninger er ikke noe unikt Donald Duck-fenomen. Så godt som alle tegneserier har samme praksis, og det stammer fra USA og Marvel-forlaget.
Så det är därför! Jag har alltid undrat!
Kalle Anka textas fortfarande med utropstecken efter varje mening. Oavsett innebörd.
