Curiously, they&#8217;ve decided to set the Opera in a S&#246;dermalm-ish present day,<span class=\"sg-marginalia-150\"><\/p>\n<p>S&#246;dermalm is the East Village of Stockholm.<\/span> with protagonists wearing hoods and jeans and leather jackets.<\/p>\n<p>Sound familiar? The musical <a href=\"http:\/\/members.aol.com\/the3guyz\/rent\/synops.htm\"><em>Rent<\/em><\/a> borrowed <em>La Boh&#232;me&#8217;s<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/opera.stanford.edu\/Puccini\/LaBoheme\/synopsis.html\">plot outline<\/a>.<span class=\"sg-marginalia-100\">Here is a slightly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metopera.org\/synopses\/boheme.html\">meatier synopsis<\/a> of <em>La Boh&#232;me<\/em>.<\/span> Now the compliment has been returned, with a traditional production of <em>La Boh&#232;me<\/em> adopting a contemporary sheen.<\/p>\n<p>But not all too convincingly. <em>Rent<\/em> took liberties with the story<span class=\"sg-marginalia-250\">I never saw <em>Rent<\/em>, of course. One lives in New York for the choice, not to actually choose. Choosing is only necessary when you entertain tourist friends.<\/span> that a faithful production of <em>La Boh&#232;me<\/em> can&#8217;t. Dying of consumption in a Swedish nanny state? I don&#8217;t think so. <span class=\"sg-marginalia-150\"><\/p>\n<p>AIDS worked in <em>Rent<\/em>. Perhaps we should just pretend Mimi has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/03\/27\/health\/27INFE.html\">SARS<\/a>?<\/span> And while no heat or light for starving artists during an East Village rent strike might make sense, in Stockholm they&#8217;d be in state-subsidized apartments and on to their second child. <\/p>\n<p>There are some fateful set design choices too. <span class=\"sg-marginalia-250\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stefangeens.com\/graphics\/blog\/boh.jpg?w=584\"><\/span>The loft with which the opera opens&#8212;in fact a float that is wheeled on to the stage&#8212;is a tricky affair. At the close of the first scene, the incipient lovers are meant to be basking in moonlight as the stage drifts off slowly, not holding on for dear life atop an Abrams tank making for Baghdad. It&#8217;s hard to profess eternal love when you&#8217;re about to take a running dive through a perspex window.<\/p>\n<p>But these are just quibbles. When Rodolphe launched into <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.operaheb.co.il\/operas\/arias\/boheme01.html\"><em>Che gelida manina<\/em><\/a><\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardleech.com\/sound_clips\/mpeg\/RL.Che.gelida.manina.mp3\">mp3<\/a>]. I got the shivers down the spine, which is a rare enough occurrence for me to declare the evening a stunning succcess then and there. Last time that happened was during the opening sequence of <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/Title?0120737\"><em>Fellowship of the Ring<\/em><\/a>, in particular the bit where the orcs fall off the ledge during the battle.<\/p>\n<p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went to La Boh&#232;me at the Kungliga Operan on Thursday.
