Hanzi Helper
Support & Information
About the App
Hanzi Helper lets you add pinyin transcription to just the difficult words in any Chinese text, so you can focus on fluency and comprehension without the distraction of pinyin everywhere.
Getting Started
The user experience is simple and built for speed: Add a text, and start reading. Touch a word to toggle pinyin. Words with pinyin are added to a word list that can be studied separately or exported to a spaced repetition app.
Save as many texts as you like: you can sort, search, tag, star and filter them, so you can find them easily and study them any time.
Adding Texts
There are many ways to add a text to Hanzi Helper:
- Copy Chinese text from any app and paste it into Hanzi Helper
- Use the share sheet from your browser or another app
- Paste a URL — Hanzi Helper will extract the text content
You can give each text an optional title (in any language) and comma-separated tags to keep your collection organized. Filter and search your texts by title, content, or tag.
Tips
- Pinyin coloring — Choose between mono-color, tone-colored, or HSK-level-colored pinyin.
- Toggle pinyin — Toggle all pinyin off to test your progress.
- Word spacing — Turn on word spacing for additional comprehension clues.
- HSK levels — See the HSK 3.0 band (1–7+) for every word to gauge difficulty at a glance.
- Text-to-speech — Listen to the text read aloud with karaoke-style word highlighting. Switch between continuous playback and step-by-step mode (phrase by phrase).
- Simplified & Traditional — Hanzi Helper supports both simplified and traditional characters.
- Word list export — Export your marked words for use in other study tools.
